I'd like to develop a plan of action for my career

Step 6: Staying positive

I've arrived at the place if I'm not taking a career risk, I'm not happy. If I'm scared, then I know I'm being challenged.

Jim Carrey

It can be hard to maintain a positive outlook during a job search or career planning process. People will sometimes be negative about what you're trying to do, and sometimes you may experience rejection and failure along the way.

To stay positive:

  • Focus on your goal
If you know what you want, then you will get there. Being clear about your goal will help you to make better decisions and provide your reason for working through difficulties.
  • Practice positive thinking
See the positive in every situation. If you miss out on a job, try to see the positive that this will bring. Setbacks are an opportunity to learn and to do things differently next time.
  • Seek the support of others
Know that you will need to rely on others for some things, to get you through difficult patches, and reciprocate with them when necessary
  • Manage your emotions
Keep everything in perspective. You can be disappointed without being devastated if you miss out, you can be realistic without being pessimistic.
