I'd like to develop a plan of action for my career

Step 3: Working out steps to achieve your goal

You will most likely need to take action in three different areas to achieve your career goal:

  • Finding suitable available jobs
  • Developing your ability to do the job
  • Marketing yourself successfully into the job

The Action Plan format will help you to consolidate your plan.

Click on each tab to learn more about Step 3.

Finding the suitable available jobs

Generally in the public service, specific vacant positions are advertised on Australian Public Service jobs website and on the relevant Departmental website.

You can now complete Section Five of the Career Action Plan.

Developing yourself to be able to do the job

Once you have identified a job or jobs that you are interested in and that fits your attributes, you need to make sure you have the skills and knowledge to do that job.

You need to find out what skills and knowledge are required.

You can find out what skills and knowledge is required by:

You need to set about developing those skills.

Once you have identified the skills and knowledge you need, you need to set about developing those skills. Think laterally about different ways to get the skills and take a long-term view. Sometimes it might take several years to develop the skills you need to do a specific job, but there are interim jobs that add to your experience base to help you to get to that dream job.

  • Volunteer in order to gain work experience
Take on work as a volunteer in a non-government organisation to get relevant experience. Websites like Volunteering Australia and GoVolunteer provide information and opportunities for volunteer work.
  • Undertake a work experience program
Many agencies and departments have work experience programs that you can do through school or university. Do an internet search on 'work experience' to identify the range of programs that might be available near you.
  • Take on a new project in your current job
If you are currently working, you might volunteer for a special project or task to get the experience you need
  • Research and read about the area
Use the internet or local library to research your topic and map out a reading program or arrange an information interview with someone who works there.
  • Go on a training course
Find a relevant course. If you are already in the Australian Public Service there might be a suitable course offered by your agency/department, or the Australian Public Service Commission also offers a range of courses. If you are not already in the Australian Public Service, you could attend a suitable short course offered by one of the many private or university providers.
  • Pursue further education
There is a guide available that lists the range of courses available at the 43 Australian universities
  • Find a buddy, coach or mentor
Talk to others who have the skill or knowledge and ask them to provide some guidance to help you to learn the skills.
  • Use the performance management system
Participate in your organisation's performance management system (this is called different things in different organisations). Seek feedback from your supervisor about how you can develop your skills and knowledge.
  • Seek advice
Talk to someone in your organisation's employee assistance service for advice on how you can develop yourself.

You can now complete Section Six of the Career Action Plan.

Marketing yourself successfully into the job

Your plan to market yourself should include the action you'll take to:

  • Keep a portfolio of the different types of work you have done – this can include your work plans, duty statements and work examples
  • Write a quality resume
  • Write a good set of claims against the selection criteria
  • Get the most out of contact you make with potential employers prior to applying for a job with them
  • Improve your interview skills – including managing nerves and preparing for different types of questions
What if I'm already in the Australian Public Service?

If you are already in the Australian Public Service, the Australian Public Service Commission has a range of training courses to assist with marketing yourself.

You can now complete the actions at Section Seven of the Career Action Plan.
